What is Tartan Day?
On March 20, 1998, The United States Senate designated April 6th of each year as “National Tartan Day.” Tartan Day honors an important day in the history of all free people. On April 6, 1320 a group of Scots asserted in the Declaration of Arbroath, that they, the people had the right to choose their own government.
The Declaration states, “We fight not for glory nor riches, nor honors, but for freedom alone, which no man gives up but with his life.” These daring words were the inspiration and template for our Declaration of Independence.
Tartan Day recognizes the contributions of Scotts and Scottish Americans to the history and development of the United States as they played a major role in the founding of the nation.
